SUMMARY
The brothers constituted one of the best-known and well-respected architecture firms in San Francisco around the turn of the last century.
James Reid served as the principal designer in the partnership and first came to California in 1888 after he was commissioned to design the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego.
Joined his brother, Merritt, in 1889 in San Francisco.
Much of their work occurred during the reconstruction of San Francisco after the 1906 Earthquake and Fire. An extremely capable and versatile firm, the Reid Brothers designed hotels, office buildings, churches, single-family residences and theaters.
Some of their most important works include the
Spreckels Temple of Music
in
Golden Gate Park
, the
Fairmont Hotel
(1906), Call Office Building (1914), the First Congregational Church (1914), and Cliff House (1908).
